Breaking: Oilers Confirms Blockbuster Trade For Philip Broberg Replacement

The Edmonton Oilers are currently facing a challenging decision regarding whether to match one or both of the offer sheets presented by the St. Louis Blues for Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg. While placing Evander Kane on long-term injured reserve (LTIR) could give the Oilers enough cap space to retain one of the players, they would still need to let the other go. Given that Broberg has been offered more money by the Blues, it might be more logical for the Oilers to let him go, accept the draft compensation, and explore alternative options for his replacement.

With the strong possibility that Broberg will join the Blues this season, it’s likely that the Oilers have started to scout for affordable replacements who can fill a similar role. Reports suggest Broberg may have requested a trade and is unhappy, which could lead the Oilers to match the offer sheet and then move him. With a second-round pick in compensation and additional cap space, the Oilers have a few potential replacements they could consider through free agency. Let’s take a look at two candidates.

Tyson Barrie is one option the Oilers might consider. Barrie, a former Oiler and current free agent, was known for his offensive contributions despite his defensive shortcomings. While some fans were critical of his defensive play, he was a valuable asset on the power play and provided offensive depth for several seasons. His familiarity with the team and positive rapport with the Oilers’ leadership could make him a good fit as a bottom-pairing defenseman, and he likely wouldn’t come with a hefty price tag.

Signing Barrie to a one-year, minimum deal would allow him to quarterback the second power-play unit and contribute in a depth role, while also boosting team morale. Although he isn’t an ideal replacement for Broberg, and not a long-term solution, Barrie’s offensive skills and veteran presence could be beneficial for a team aiming for a Stanley Cup.

Another potential target is Justin Schultz, another former Oiler who performed well for the Seattle Kraken last season. Schultz has established himself as a reliable two-way depth defenseman throughout his career. He began his NHL journey with the Oilers before being traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016, where he won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017. With his championship experience, Schultz could be a cost-effective addition to the Oilers’ blue line as they pursue their first Stanley Cup since 1990.

Currently a free agent, Schultz would likely accept a short-term, low-cost contract to return to the Oilers. Joining a team that was one game away from winning a championship last season could be an appealing prospect for Schultz, who is likely looking to add another Stanley Cup to his résumé before his play begins to decline.

If the Oilers do end up losing Broberg, either Barrie or Schultz could provide valuable depth. With the recent Ty Emberson and Vasily Podkolzin trades freeing up some cap space, the Oilers may still have the option to match both offer sheets. However, if they decide to let Broberg go, targeting one of these free agents could help bolster their chances of making a deep playoff run. More clarity on the situation is expected today (Aug. 19), as the Oilers will need to finalize where Holloway and Broberg will play this season, but until then, speculation continues.
